Inside The Vault – hidden storage for the world’s coolest cars

The Vault Bighorn golf Palm Desert ErinLYYCWith an electronic click a biometric scanner grants us access to a giant underground compound. The door thunks closed, and the silence is palpable.

Surfaces gleam, everything shines, and it’s possible for a moment to think you’re the first person ever to be ushered inside.

An invitation to The Vault

It’s not every day you get invited to take a look inside a vault. But this is no ordinary bank lockup, and it’s about 10 times the size of the average one. This Vault is located under the sand of the Mojave in Palm Desert California, hidden behind the gates of one of America’s most exclusive clubs.

Approaching from the west, down a curved driveway, The Vault is an impressive sight. With two massive circular doors reminiscent of something from Fort Knox, and human-size lettering across the front, there’s no mistaking that you’ve arrived at a very special place.

The Vault is essentially an ultra exclusive club within an ultra exclusive club.

Located at the very private Bighorn Golf Club where some of America’s richest and most powerful families own property, The Vault is a facility with a very special and specific purpose; it’s a giant, meticulously appointed showroom-garage for elite collectors and automobile enthusiasts.

The Vault is for elite car collectors

The Vault was constructed as a pristine and secure storage facility for specialty collector automobiles and fine expensive cars.

It was conceived when one of the members of Bighorn noticed some other members spending tens of thousands of dollars adding garage space to homes at the club to store their luxury automobiles.

A large centralized facility was proposed that members could essentially buy storage space in, for less than the cost of a home reno. Dozens of members lined up to back the plan.

Redline Lounge is a haven for collectors

Once through security, and up a few steps, there’s a beautiful lounge area with a bar, cushy leather seating reminiscent of fine automobiles, TVs, tables and auto-inspired decor. Known as the Redline Lounge, the area is accessible only to members who store cars here.

One wall of the lounge is floor-to-ceiling windows, and it overlooks the garage and the precious collection within. The floor is polished concrete so shiny it reflects both the overhead lights and the neon colours of some of the orderly rows of vehicles resting on the surface.

Vintage cars & new automobile technology in The Vault

The Vault Bighorn golf Palm Desert ErinLYYCCars from last century are parked beside some of the newest and most technologically advanced vehicles of today. Every vehicle is absolutely spotless, dustless and there’s not a speck of dirt to indicate these cars have ever seen the open road. They have, of course; members are free to take their cars out any time they please, but the care that goes into their use and storage is obvious. Engines gleam under the canopy of hoods, tires shine and grilles glint. The Vault Bighorn golf Palm Desert ErinLYYC

Bathrooms too pretty to use

Even that bathrooms inside the Vault are a sight to behold, and its obvious no expense has been spared. Polished steel toilets, and glowing LEDs under glinting lucite surfaces inside the bathroom lend it an otherworldly feel. The Vault Bighorn golf Palm Desert ErinLYYC

As an outsider, getting a private tour of this incredible space for this blog was fascinating. It’s hard to imagine being so rich you can buy storage space in a millionaire’s private vault, but it was definitely inspiring to see what success can get you.

The Vault door whooshes closed behind us, and we step back into the dry desert air, heading back to the main area (a mini downtown?) of the property. Bighorn offers more than just a fancy garage. There’s several restaurants, a spa and even a Starbucks, all reserved exclusive for members of this community.

Bighorn’s motto is “No limits, nothing ordinary” and the property definitely lives up to that. If you’re inspired to inquire about membership, you’ll first need to own property at Bighorn. Current real estate prices range from $1.7 to $11 million USD. Your yearly membership fees are on top of that. But hey, it gives us all something to aspire to, right?

Carpets that glow; the future of flooring

luminous

It can be hard for a business to stand out. Signs and email marketing campaigns are old school. How about making an impression from the ground up?

What are Luminous Carpets?

Brand new lighting technology is allowing for LED lights to be imbedded in carpet, meaning companies can display directions or even advertisements to people in ways they’re not expecting.

A system called Luminous Carpets lets you touch your smartphone or tablet, and then lights under your feet brightly display images or words. Even dynamic moving images are an option.

Just a few ways Luminous Carpets can be used:

  • Draw in crowds at tradeshows, with eye-catching floor displays
  • Greet and guide hotel guests, making them feel welcome
  • Go hand in hand with the aesthetics of your building, with high-quality carpet material that looks good even when the lights are off.

luminous_carpets_teatro_madrid“Luminous Carpets combine Philips LED technology with resilient but luxurious looking Desso carpet, explains the website for the technology, “The result is a durable, stylish flooring solution that you can use to greet, impress and inform people in new and exciting ways.”

Luminous Carpets can be connected to electrical or IT infrastructure, and synced to run a variety of pre-programmed light displays. Or, you can change the lights on-demand from tablet and any other networked devices.

How Luminous carpets work

The thin LED panels and lights pair with ‘light transmissive carpet tiles’ to allow light to shine right through the carpet on the floor. The LEDs are built into enclosed units that are strong enough to be walked on while still protecting against liquids or spills, and they’re designed not to overheat.

While the business and commercial applications are obvious, it could be pure fun to have something like this in a  home. Sick of your boring beige carpets? Why not sparkle things up with gold lights? Celebrating a birthday? You can write a bold welcome message for the celebrant’s arrival. Think of the fun you could have.

‘Missing’ Calgary Herald Gargoyle found on eBay? Owner asks $4500

For many years, a gaggle of gargoyles presided over the Len Werry building that housed the Calgary Herald.   Rebuilding and renovations saw them removed from the building, and some were sold off to history and art buffs or former employees, while others were put away for storage to be re-used in the future.  Some, according to an article in the paper, are ‘missing’ or perhaps their ownership was never properly recorded. Modern Homes Tour shows Calgary’s chicest modernist homes

img_5776Calgary Modern Home Tour, Sep 24, 2016 – Calgary architecture has come a long way. From being known for its sandstone buildings years ago, to newer, more revolutionary buildings and structures like The Bow, or the Peace Bridge, Calgary is increasingly able to boast architectural structures that are worthy of bragging about.

Probably not surprising then there was an excellent turnout today for the first ever Calgary Modern Home Tour. Featuring five home in three quadrants across the city, this home tour featured a mix of brand new builds, more recent construction, and both show homes and lived-in family houses.img_5744

Each of the five homes was stunningly beautiful in its own way; whether it was unique and distinct architectural features, or elements of interior design that set it apart.

Organized by the Modern Architecture + Design Society which is based in the US, the events are, “carefully curated by and for lovers of all things modern, we capture the finest and most original innovations in architecture, design and lifestyle.”

The homes were largely located in central Calgary, and easy to see in the time allotted (11am-5pm). At several of the homes we were able to chat with the architects, designers, builders and even homeowners about why design decisions were made, how the homes were decorated to maximize features, and even what it’s like living inside an architectural gem.img_5788img_5783

At one home overlooking the Bow river (built by Newgrowth Fine Homes), a central feature of the home was a poured concrete wall, complete with the imprint of rough-hewn wood left behind from the cribbing. The homeowner told us is was a feat of engineering (her husband was the engineer, so she should know!) and took careful planning to avoid a blowout. The pour was done in three stages, basement, main floor, then upper, and took about a year to complete. The wood imprint provides a wall that’s strong and structural, but also appears both natural and warm.

img_5771-1The Modern Architecture  + Design Society writes on its website, about the wall that it’s, “an implied barrier between the public and private spaces. It remains exposed as a central core – the stair floats upward in a ribbon against it, the archways lead to new spaces and it is the dramatic kitchen wall.”

Another fascinating home near Marda Loop was modular; the outer shell is crafted (by housebrand), floors are put in (oiled oak) and then instead of traditional drywall walls, giant deep modular floor-to-ceiling closets act as room dividers, meaning the interior of the home can be customized or adjusted as the family’s needs grow and change.

Perhaps the most distinctive home simply from an aesthetic perspective was an industrial-modern property that used corrugated metal and grates on the outside, with a sleek but bright inside. The stunning and huge all white kitchen features touch-latch cabinets that make it seem as though everything is stashed behind hidden panels, and gives way to both a wide-open dining area and a living room. Gorgeous maple accents and floor-to-ceiling windows on both the main and lower level ensure the home will never feel too stark.calgary-modern-homeThe home tour was a real treat and a chance to peek inside some amazing houses.
